Oldham. May 2008 (18mins)
REELmcr was approached by Revealing Histories to make two films as part of the commemoration of the Bi-Centenary of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade.
The first group we chose was from Oldham, as one of the project’s partners was Gallery Oldham. As Oldham was nothing more than a village two hundred years ago, the group decided to look at indentured labour, and the movement of people from the Bengal to the Caribbean.
A group of young people who come from two estates in Oldham, very divided along the lines of race, wrote this film, and there can be no greater proof of a project’s success than when a group, as divided as this one once was, can look at a story of one race’s history and wish for the message to be one of reconciliation, desire for greater understanding, and unity.
