Don’t
judge a book by its cover.
The long summer holiday and shop front boredom has taken its toll on the
Gorton Girls who face a split right down the middle. McKenzie (Jade Staley)
who has been the iron faced leader from time is getting increasing challenges
from Elle (Martine Tiplady) who will play any card to tilt the balance
in her favour. Most of the girls just want an easy time and will go with
‘whatever’ but some are getting sick of the same old routine
and are looking for something better. One thing they’re all united
on though, and something that always gives a laugh, is baiting ‘The
Slug’ (Marion O’Brien), an old bag lady with a one eyed dog.
She takes their abuse and shuffles past never once making them ask themselves,
‘Who the hell do you think you are?’. As the leadership battle
rages around the question of them taking part in the upcoming All Manchester
Dance Championships and slagging
off the slug, the girls are approached

by Danny (Chris Hand) an older lad now studying in London. He questions their lack of vision and encourages Lois (Sarah Henshall) to make the break and pursue her dreams. Very soon tragedy strikes and The Slug is gone and a police investigation is launched. Everyone is under suspicion and consciences combed over as true life details emerge and the girls are confronted by the reality of their misconception. (Synopsis by Paddy Wagon)
