MADHOUSE

Video, Langworthy, Salford. August, 2004. (31mins DVCAM)

“Madhouse’ holds a classic collection. Characters of all varieties, unashamedly entertaining, hilarious and desperately sad. And that’s just the staff. Nurse Kim (Rachel Morrison) battles it out on ward rounds trying to get attention for patients who’ve somehow got in the way of the consultant’s golf. As the punters jostle for position their stories unfold taking us behind the doors of many Salford madhouses. A street level grasp of psychiatry and justice are combined and ‘treatment’ meted out with barbarity. And while we watch the fireworks fly we miss the true tragedy slowly unfolding before us. Behind every vacant stare, every scar, every silence, there’s a story. A story of a life slipped out of reach. In ‘Madhouse’ we stretch out our arms and try to pull them in. But, for all the colour, humour and warm-hearted humanity, there’ll always be those we couldn’t quite get to.
